Director of Disaster Management
Office of National Security
The people that died in the landslide and flooding were over five hundred that why the Government declared it as Disaster. The causes ranges from one to multi versatile cause, Number one cause people have done lot of Deforestation, they have cut down the trees Deforestation is a major challenge to many of the problem affecting us. Also, Wind storm Disaster after cleaning the forest nothing will serve as wind breaker so when the wind is heavy if trees were present the velocity of the speed of the wind will reduce because the trees are present. Also, when you go up the hills, people do stone mining I the forest, the place that do stone mining there I an English word “Archripha” is a please where the rock are, and it is a source of water and if it was. Deforested and do stone mining it will expose the please, the water that are present will dry because the sun will heat ground and it will dry because of evaporation. You’ll know that those laces are prone to disaster, you will always live in constant fear.
Yvone Aki Sawyer
Mayor of Freetown
My name is Yvone Akie Sawyer, I am the mayor of Freetown, the cause of disaster is over population , Freetown is now over one million and every year the number of people increase, the people that did the studies say that every year 4,2 percent people add up to the population of Freetown and because of this number and the cist of housing is so high, people build everywhere, because of lack of control we have seen so many disaster.
We know that it is the gabages that people throws is gutter that cause the flooding, but this year when we do the flood mitigation plan as council we realize that it is the garbage That people throw in the gutter for example when you have a tree with root so when you cut down the tree during rain season everything will waash away.
The plans that have for city are in four groups they are refere to as clusters. They are resilience, human development, Healthy city urban mobility, in resilience that is where we have disaster management.
Isha Alhassan Kargbo
My name is Isha Alhassan Karbo, I lived in Akram, I was born here, we do not normally have disaster because the Kulvest wasn’t block, and since the Kulvert blocked we started having flooding, houses were destroyed, I am a student of Caripas college, last year during the flooding my books were destroyed, some of my collegues lost their lives others were rescue, I also fell into the flood but thank God I was rescued, it is also a challenge as the former President promise to open the Kulvert yet the Kulvert is blocked.
Pharrel John Koroma
Youth Chairman of Akram Kissy Brook
The past four years we were having flloding because the kulvert was bloked, but I believed that it is the city garbage dumping ground that blcked the kulvert, the ground have been there for decade, they placed the kulver so when people throws garbage under the kulvert and the machine compress and destroys that kulvert, and when the kulvert is blocked we experience flooding.
Ahemed Tejan Barrie
Youth Chairman of Kroo bay road community
My name is Ahmed Tejan Barrie, I am the vice youth chaiman of kroo bay road community, we normally get disaster during the raining season that is because of the deinage system in our community, we have two main drainage in our community one is the crocodile river runs from kingdom bridge direct to our community ant the other is from Joki bridge which is also known as samba gutter so when these two drinages get full and collided it causes flooding and enter houses, this retaining wall id they constructed it side by side on a high hight.
My message to the government is to remove the slum from the people not the people from the slum, if you remove the slum from the people the slum will develop as one of the best laces in Africa.
They should put drainage where it supposed to be and build where necessary, that I what the government should do not removing the people from the slum
LET’S PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT
- STOP Throwing garbage’s in the gutter
- STOP Deforestation
- STOP Stone mining
- STOP Building on wet lands
- STOP Putting structure on water run ways
Together we can make Freetown a disaster free city.
